Arranging multiple vegetable plants in a large container requires careful planning to ensure each plant has enough space, sunlight, and nutrients to thrive.

Sunlight

The most critical aspect is to arrange the plants so the tallest plant does not block the sunlight away from the shorter plants.

In addition to the layout based on the expected height of a fully grown plants, the growth speed must also be considered. For example a fast-growing radish can surprise you by casting shadow on a newly transplanted cucumber plant never giving it a chance to grow.

Spacing

Follow guidelines for each plant for how much space it requires. Jamming too many plants into a limited space will not result in a bigger harvest. On the contrary, you will get low-quality vegetables.

Either read the guidelines for each plant or, for simplicity, follow a square-foot gardening rule for allocating one plant per square foot of space.

Pruning and Support

  • Prune plants as needed to encourage healthy growth and allow sunlight and airflow.
  • Support tall plants with stakes or cages.

Plant Compatibility

Not all plants are good neighbours. Some combinations can be detrimental and others are complimentary in terms of creating nutrient rich environment. See our blog on Vegetables That Make Good Container Companions.

  • Avoid planting the same families of plants in the same spot each year to prevent soil depletion and reduce the risk of pests and diseases.
  • Pay attention to how plants interact over time and be prepared to make adjustments as necessary.

Below are some general suggestions based on the container size you are working with.

Rectangular Container

Back Row: Tall plants (e.g. tomatoes, pole beans)

Middle Row: Medium-height plants (e.g. peppers, eggplants)

Front Row: Short or trailing plants (e.g. lettuce, spinach, herbs)

Circular Container

Centre: Tall plants (e.g., tomatoes)

Middle Ring: Medium-height plants (e.g. peppers)

Outer Ring: Short or trailing plants (e.g. lettuce, strawberries, herbs)
