Learn which plants produce the most yield and have extended production periods so you can harvest them continuously and generate your own supply of vegetables all season long.
Not all vegetables are made equal. Some require more space to grow, offering a limited volume of produce in return. Others will generate a continuous harvest throughout the growing season in a small space.
Vegetables for Continuous Harvest:
Tomatoes
Tomatoes are a staple in many gardens due to their high yield. Indeterminate varieties, such as 'Cherry' and 'Roma', continue to produce fruit throughout the growing season.
Tip: These plants can yield even more tomatoes with proper support and pruning. Using a trellis system can further maximise your space and output.
Cucumbers
Varieties like 'Marketmore' are prolific producers.
Tip: Cucumbers are excellent for vertical gardening. By training cucumber vines to grow on trellises, you save ground space and increase yield per square foot. Make sure to provide adequate support and regular watering for the best results.
Courgette
Even though they require more space than other vegetables, their yield per plant is so high that they still rank as one of the most productive vegetables. Varieties like 'Black Beauty' and 'Cocozelle' can produce a continuous supply of zucchinis throughout the growing season.
Aubergine
Very similar to courgettes, these plants can produce a continuous supply of vegetables, justifying its tiny bit requirement for space.
Peppers
Peppers, including both bell and hot varieties, are compact plants that produce abundantly per square foot. Varieties like 'Bell Boy' and 'Jalapeño' are known for their prolific yields.
Tip: Peppers thrive in warm conditions and benefit from regular feeding and watering.
Beans
Both bush and pole beans are high-yielding plants. Pole beans, like 'Kentucky Wonder' and 'Scarlet Runner', continue to produce throughout the season.
Tip: Pole beans benefit from vertical space, climbing trellises and providing a continuous harvest.
Kale
Kale can be harvested continually by picking the lower leaves. Varieties like 'Lacinato' are known for their robust growth and ability to thrive in various conditions. Kale's ability to produce leaves over a long period makes it a top choice for maximising yield.
Herbs
Many herbs, such as basil, parsley, and cilantro, can produce leaves continuously when regularly harvested.
